UberX, UberXL, Uber Black – What’s the Difference?

Are you a little confused about Uber’s various services? The names of the services offered by Uber have changed several times since its inception in 2009. The services seem to stay about the same, however. In this article we will explain them all.

UberX – The low cost Uber
Everyday cars for everyday use. Better, faster and cheaper than a taxi.

Uber indicates that the driver-partner must show up with a model year 2006 or newer and the vehicle is required to have passed an independent vehicle inspection. More than likely, you will be picked up in a Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Mazda3, Ford Escape, Ford Escort or another model of a similar size. UberX drivers use regular cars that are not typically luxury sedans nor SUVs.

UberX prices are the lowest of the five categories listed on Uber.com’s current Web site.Check Uber.com for the most recent fares in your area. Typically, they are much less than cab fare.

Previously, in the UberX category, UberPlus, also known as UberSelect, was offered in some markets. The vehicle standards are higher, so expect a luxuryvehicle such as a Mercedes Benz, BMW or an Audi. UberPlus is a good option when you want a nicer car, but you don’t want to pay for Black Car service.

UberTaxi – Taxi without the hassle

No whistling, no waving, no cash needed.

UberTaxi is not a taxi service per se. According to Uber Montreal, Uber doesn’t employ taxi drivers nor owns a fleet of cars. What UberTaxi does is connect drivers with customers using a smartphone GPS-based app. With a simple “e-hail,” a passenger notifies Uber the moment he or she wants a cab. The system then replies to the passenger, indicating when he or she can expect a taxi to arrive, complete with the driver’s name, contact information, GPS location and customer performance rating immediately made available. There is no current information regarding which cities are scheduled next.

UberSUV – Room for everyone

For those times when you need a bit more room. Seats up to six people in style.

UberXL seems to have been replaced with UberSUV. Both products claim they seat
six passengers. UberXL and UberSUV have the same description, with one exception.
UberXL also offers a mini-van. Both offer room for at least six passengers and a higher fare than UberX. If you are looking for the least expensive Uber option for a larger group, it looks like UberSUV/UberXL could be your best choice.

UberBlack – The Original

Your own private driver, on demand. Expect pickup in a high-end sedan within minutes.

Black car is the professional livery service that has given Uber a high-end reputation in the business world. The vehicle and driver standards are much higher for Black Car. Expect a luxury sedan that seats up to six riders. Expect a BMW, Mercedes Benz, Audi or other vehicles in the same category with a leather interior. Uber’s executive luxury service uses commercially registered and insured livery vehicles, typically a black luxury SUV or luxury sedan. Black Car fare prices are higher than UberX and Uber Plus, catering specifically to wealthier users, business people, celebrities and Uber users who are willing to spend a little extra for special occasions.

UberLux – Ultimate Luxury

The finest cars with prices to match.

UberLux was recently introduced at the SXSW in Austin, TX. Uber wants you to have a chanceto arrive like a real billionaire entrepreneur. Uber partnered with an Austin-based limo company to bring you exotic vehicles including Rolls Royce Ghost, Porsche Panamera, BMW 7 series, Audi A8 and Range Rovers to get you around in Uber style. Riding in a Lux is not for the faint of heart, according to Uber’s announcement. The ride comes with a $75 minimum. You can find the full pricing breakdown on Uber.com.
